Overview

Unpacking Japan is a weekly podcast we produce, interviewing foreigners living in Japan. It is filmed and published on YouTube, and available on all major podcasting platforms (Apple Podcast, Spotify, etc.)

The Client

ZenGroup is an e-commerce company based in Osaka. ZenGroup is made of multiple businesses, including ZenMarket, ZenPlus, ZenPop and ZenPromo. They offer various cross-border e-commerce services, such as proxy-buying from Japan, a digital marketplace, subscription boxes, and marketing services.

Purpose

Unpacking Japan aims to create a platform where voices from across Japan are heard, fostering understanding and connection.
For this project we research guests, contact them, and plan weekly interviews in our studio in Osaka.
Our website, unpacking.jp, supports the project and turns it into a multimedia platform, with over 4 million views across all channels.

Production

Our three camera setup adds to the production quality and makes conversations look dynamic. The audio is recorded on some of the best podcasting mics (SHURE SM7B) used by other popular podcasters. It is distributed across the internet mainly via YouTube and podcasting platforms, as well as in short form on Instagram and Twitter.

Each episode is around an hour long, and we post about 5–7 clips weekly on a secondary channel, as well as daily shorts from the conversation on social media.

Branding

We also created the podcast’s visual identity, including the logo, website, business cards, social media templates, and more.

The logo is inspired by a Daruma doll, which is seen as a symbol of perseverance and good luck in Japan. The right eye gets usually filled in when the owner’s goal is achieved, and our daruma has only its left eye filled to represent that we, both the channel and the guests, are all in the middle of our journey. It’s Japanese and charming, which fits us perfectly.
